This year's Black history month ended in powerful fashion, as Avondale welcomed Cincinnati's Only Black owned grocery store and the neighborhood’s First grocery store in 16 years! 

 

The timing couldn’t be more perfect. With a black organized, nationwide boycott taking place, the people were in need of a place to shop; and the Bryants came through.

Chanel and Tennel Bryant, a local black couple, cemented their already impressive legacies this Friday as they celebrated the grand opening of The Country Meat Co. Marketplace! Located in the Avondale Town Center, this store takes pride in their premium meats, farm-fresh produce and focus on black owned brands filling their shelves. This full-service grocery store also features an in store coffee shop, along with hot and ready meals for days on the go. 

The Bryant family has been in the butchering business since 1965! Previously serving the community through their location at Findlay Market, Chanel and Tennel Bryant decided to take the family business to new heights. 

 

It was an absolute Smashing Success. The line nearly wrapped around the building at its peak, and showed no signs of lightening up throughout the day. Despite the constant stream of customers, The Marketplace was able to keep up with the intense demand. Showing just how prepared the Bryant family was for this trailblazing moment. A day almost defined by the black communities withholding of the dollar, instead highlighted by our ability to come together and prove that we don’t need the government or any other nonblack institution to survive. 

Echos of seemingly forgotten Black Power movements filled the air, as the people of Cincinnati came together in a true display of Black Economic Independence and Sovereignty.
